CHAPTER 4 MAINTENANCE OF A DIESEL ENGINE

4.1 MANUFACTURER'S MAINTENANCE MANUAL

All reputable manufacturers of diesel engines provide comprehensive maintenance manuals for their engines. The instructions in the manuals must be followed very closely. The manual usually consist of a maintenance chart as shown in Fig A3 in the Appendix, instructions on how to service the various items listed in the maintenance chart and the of the fuel and lubricant required in the engine.

4.2 SCHEDULE OF MAINTENANCE

Apart from daily and weekly maintenance, a diesel engine needs to be maintained in accordance to the operating hours actually clocked rather than based on calendar months. Therefore it is utterly important that an accurate log book be kept for each engine. Fig A4 in the Appendix shows an example of a page of a diesel alternator log book. For a static engine such as a diesel alternator blackboard may be kept in the engine room to monitor the maintenance of the engines as shown below:

  1. Diesel Alternator - Last Maintenance (Date/Hour meter) - Next Maintenance (Approx/Hour meter) - Remarks (250 hrs @ monthly/Annually
