3.3 DIESEL ENGINE CONTROL

3.3 DIESEL ENGINE CONTROL

An instrument panel is usually mounted on the engine to provide control over the engine. The following are normally fitted in the panel:
· Starting switch
· Tachometer
· Hour meter
· Battery charging meter
· Coolant temperature gauge
· Oil pressure gauge
· Oil temperature gauge

Modern diesel engine manufacturers also provide engine protection that automatically shuts down the engine the moment any of the following occurs:
· Low coolant level
· High coolant temperature
· Low oil pressure
· Engine overspeed

Each of the above parameters have a sensing device e.g. pressure switch for the low oil pressure, that actuate a solenoid valve that shuts the fuel to the fuel pump.
