UK graduates must upskill to compete globally
A new report highlighted the skills graduates need to compete on an international stage and warned that UK graduates aren’t looking beyond the border.
It stated that graduates seeking work need to develop ‘global employability skills’ to help them succeed in an increasingly competitive international marketplace.
In the research project, the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR), Council for Industry and Higher Education (CIHE) and research agency CFE have explored how businesses define global graduates and what higher-education institutions and policy makers can do to develop graduates capable of competing on the international stage.
Leading employers, who collectively recruit more than 3,500 graduates each year across a range of sectors, were asked to rank a list of key skills for global graduates and placed multilingualism low down. While the ability to speak a foreign language is an important skill, it was viewed as a complementary rather than an essential skill.
The skills identified as the most important by some distance were ‘an ability to work collaboratively with teams of people from a range of backgrounds and countries’ and ‘excellent communication skills’; these were followed by ‘drive and resilience’ and ‘an ability to embrace different perspectives’.
The report highlighted that external mobility among UK students is low, lagging way behind their international competitors. There are 370,000 foreign students studying in the UK, and recent estimates suggest there are just 33,000 UK students studying abroad. This is borne out by the fact that the UK has the lowest participation rate for the Erasmus student exchange programme in Europe. There were 11,723 UK students who took up a place on the programme in 2009–10, compared with 28,854 in Germany, 30,213 in France and 31,158 in Spain.
Commenting on the research, David Docherty, chief executive of the Council for Industry and Higher Education, said: ‘A global graduate isn’t simply a highly educated young adult who can speak a foreign language. Employers want talented graduates who can work with people from different backgrounds and embrace different perspectives.’
He claimed it is up to government and educational institutions to provide the right environments and opportunities for young people to flourish and enable them to develop not only sound employability skills, but a global mindset too.
Carl Gilleard, chief executive of the Association of Graduate Recruiters, said: ‘We can either sit back and wait for the BRIC nations to start producing the best global graduates, or we can address this issue now.
‘There needs to be a collaborative effort to facilitate opportunities for industry to introduce the idea of global business activity as early as possible; to provide viable opportunities for students to both study overseas and experience the global workplace, through internships and work placements; and to develop degree programmes to include more of these global employability skills, to ensure we’re producing the best talent for multinational employers to recruit from, both for their operations in the UK and further afield.’

Tafsiran Surah Maryam
Kisah Nabi Isa AS dalam Surah Maryam
(Surah Maryam: 21)
Kelahiran ‘Isa a.s.
‘Isa a.s. Mempertahankan Kehormatan Ibunya

Advantages of Management by Objectives
Involving employees in the whole process of goal setting and increasing employee empowerment. This increases employee job satisfaction and commitment.
2. Better communication and Coordination
Frequent reviews and interactions between superiors and subordinates helps to maintain harmonious relationships within the organization and also to solve many problems.
3. Clarity of goals
4. Subordinates tend to have a higher commitment to objectives they set for themselves than those imposed on them by another person.
5. Managers can ensure that objectives of the subordinates are linked to the organization's objectives.
Management by Objectives
The term "management by objectives" was first popularized by Peter Drucker in his 1954 book 'The Practice of Management'.
The essence of MBO is
- participative goal setting,
- choosing course of actions and decision making.
An important part of the MBO is the measurement and the comparison of the employee’s actual performance with the standards set.
Ideally, when employees themselves have been involved with the goal setting and choosing the course of action to be followed by them, they are more likely to fulfill their responsibilities.
According to George S. Odiorne, the system of management by objectives can be described as a process whereby the superior and subordinate managers of an organization jointly identify its common goals, define each individual's major areas of responsibility in terms of the results expected of him, and use these measures as guides for operating the unit and assessing the contribution of each of its members.
Benefits of having clear objectives
- Provide direction by revealing expectations
- Allow synergy
- Aid in evaluation by serving as standards
- Establish priorities
- Reduce uncertainty
- Minimize conflicts
- Stimulate exertion (force)
- Aid in allocation of resources
- Aid in design of jobs
- Provide basis for consistent decision making

Aku mencari arah dan tuju
- Perjalanan hidup aku ibarat sebuah pengembaraan.

The Story of Azman: From Young Engineer to First-Class Internal Combustion Engineer
Six years may seem like a blink of an eye to some, but for Azman, the period between January 2006 and September 2011 was filled with sacrifice, commitment, and determination.
On December 9th, 2011, he received official confirmation that he had successfully passed the First-Class Internal Combustion Engineer Certification Interview, which he had attempted in September of that year. Although he was already aware of the unofficial results earlier, receiving the official letter brought immense satisfaction amidst the pressure of work, MBA studies, and family responsibilities.
Yet, the journey was not straightforward. Azman had to endure eight examinations, only passing each on his second attempt. Some observers suggested he was fortunate to hold a Mechanical Engineering degree, which exempted him from the written examinations mandated under the Factories and Machinery Act (FMA) 19671. However, Azman knew well that luck alone was not enough—success required a combination of proper techniques, perseverance, and commitment.
His determination began early, during his first year as a cadet engineer, when he understood the critical importance of obtaining this certification for his professional future. From that moment, he refused to look back. Every piece of advice from superiors and colleagues was applied with discipline and persistence.
Crucially, Azman acknowledged that his journey was supported by others. His family was a pillar of strength, enduring his stress-induced changes in behavior during examination periods. His mother, in particular, became a spiritual anchor, offering prayers for his success before each test2.
Mentorship also played a defining role. His manager, Tahang Mohd Tang, frequently shared practical exam strategies3. Likewise, his peer Salahuddin, a former Felda engineer who later joined Petronas, provided valuable technical knowledge that helped Azman succeed in particularly difficult examinations4.
The challenges were not only intellectual but also financial and managerial. As an assistant engineer, Azman lived on a modest salary but had to personally fund travel tickets, accommodation, and other expenses related to the examinations. Later, as a manager, the burden shifted toward balancing heavy work responsibilities with exam preparation5.
If Azman had allowed these obstacles to become excuses, he might never have achieved his goals. Instead, he saw every barrier as a test of resilience. For him, the equation was simple:
“You lose some, you gain some.”
Ultimately, his achievement was not the product of privilege or shortcuts. It was the outcome of resilience, strategic preparation, and the understanding that nothing of value comes without sacrifice.
