FELDA Lauded For Green Initiative

Khamis, 18 Februari 2010
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 17 -- Felda, the biggest palm oil-based company in the world, is heading in the right direction towards a greener environment with its initiative to convert methane gas into electricity.

According to Water and Energy Consumers Association of Malaysia (Wecam) secretary-general S. Piarapakaran, the green technology would serve a dual purpose of reducing the amount of methane production, as well as become a renewable source of energy.

This example, he told Bernama, could be replicated in industries such as sewerage -- currently handled by Indah Water Consortium -- for connected services, as well as solid waste handling facilities.

Methane, produced through an anaerobic process in the palm oil industry, has 21 times the impact as a greenhouse gas, as compared to carbon dioxide.

While it is also produced naturally when dead organisms decayed, the rise of methane in the environment is a cause for concern.

It is due to this fact that the oil palm industry is subject to many criticisms, as a source of environmental pollution.

Therefore, Piarapakaran said, Felda's effort should be lauded as it was in accordance with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's promotion of green energy as part of the nation's green initiative.
